MUMBAI: Domestic trials and innovations recomended by the ICC''s Cricket Committe-Playing to be ratified by the exective board were quite interesting and clear except the part about the batsmen dictating which overs to apply the field restrictions.
Right now the field restrictions are all too predictable, for the first 15 overs of the game. Teams can plan their strategy. In the propsoed system there will be an element of surprise.
At first it was not clear how the nomination of the overs would be done, ad hoc or what. Till the chairman of the committee, Sunil Gavaskar, clarified in a communication fro Dubai where he had gone for the meeting :``The batsmen can nominate in five-over slots.''
So, when Sachin Tendulkar goes out to bat with Sehwag he knows quicks like Sami and Shoaib are bowling and can opt for restrictions for the first five and may be keep five pending for the last five of the innings when the quicks come back. And let the team use the balance five in between depending on the rate of scoring.
The opposition can also make their moves by rotating the bowlers who can use the restrictions better. All very unpredictable and exciting. Like a game of chess.
